Summer Highlights July

In this July, our kitchen thoughtfully prepared a variety of treats, banana juice, smoked plum juice, and pancakes in chocolate, blueberry, and apple flavors, along with cheesecake and donuts, to bring a touch of sweetness and refreshment to the hot summer days.
At the same time, we also curated a series of engaging exchange events, fostering meaningful interactions with friends from both Taiwan and the local Shibaura community, creating warm and memorable moments together.

EXHIBITION |Ideal Living

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Taipei Cultural Memory Center, SHIBAURA HOUSE partnered with Taipei-based creative studio Plan b to present an 11-day exhibition exploring the theme of ideal living.

A home is like a mirror, it reflects its residents’ values, lifestyles, and everyday moments. This exhibition brought together Japan’s Nikken Sekkei, Taiwan’s Hola Home, and Plan b to co-create content inspired by daily scenes from both Japan and Taiwan.Spanning three floors, the exhibition journeyed from “Scenes on the Way Home” on the 1st floor, to “Entering the Neighborhood” on the 2nd, and finally “Coming Home” on the 5th floor. Interactive elements included “Draw Your Ideal Home,” a vintage-style marble game, DIY sticker puzzles, and a vending machine featuring a curated selection of Taiwanese design brands, all inviting participation from local residents and visitors alike.

EVENT |Outdoor Beach Film

Location: Seaside Park, Odaiba,Minato City 

The Waterside Cinema at Odaiba Seaside Park drew an incredible turnout, with 300 to 400 people gathering for a magical summer evening by the sea.The featured film, The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily—an Italian-French animated tale about the coexistence of bears and humans—captivated the crowd.As the sun set and sea breeze swept through, families and friends arrived with picnic mats, snacks, drinks, and folding chairs, turning the beach into a festive outdoor theater. The moment the screen lit up, the shore transformed into a coastal dreamscape.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the night so memorable. We hope to gather again next summer for another unforgettable evening by the sea.

FESTIVAL |Douhua(豆花)at the Summer Festival

Every summer, the Shibaura shopping street hosts a neighborhood festival, and SHIBAURA HOUSE proudly joins as a participating venue.Last year, we collaborated on a theme of recycling. This year, with the Ideal Living exhibition by Taiwan’s Plan b underway, we brought the spirit of a Taiwanese night market to the streets—featuring douhua, a traditional Taiwanese dessert made from soy milk with a soft, jelly-like texture, similar to almond tofu.

To recreate its authentic flavor, we invited Mr. Takuto Yoshida from Okayama City, whom we serendipitously met at a douhua shop in Tokyo. Served with fruits and red beans, the dessert was a hit—selling 180 cups and receiving lots of love from the community.Big thanks to everyone who helped make this possible!We can’t wait to see what next year’s summer festival will bring.

EVENT |Watermelon Smashing

As a beloved Japanese summer tradition, suikawari (watermelon smashing) never fails to delight both kids and adults. This year, SHIBAURA HOUSE hosted a laughter-filled watermelon challenge for everyone to enjoy!

Two giant, ice-cold watermelons were placed in the center of the mat. Over 20 children took turns, blindfolded with towels and armed with wooden sticks, standing one meter away and ready for action. The crowd became cheerful guides, shouting, “A little to the left! Go forward! Hit it!”—filling the space with excitement.The challenge went on for nearly an hour. Laughter echoed, but the watermelons remained unscathed. Finally, we lifted the blindfold rule—and with full concentration and cheers from the crowd, the children finally landed the perfect hit! The watermelon split open with a satisfying crack, its sweet aroma instantly filling the air.Everyone shared in the well-earned treat—not just the families, but also all the SHIBAURA HOUSE members who cheered them on.More than just a game, it became a joyful summer memory of teamwork, laughter, and refreshment.
