Designing a landscape that changes everyone, starting with one building

I: When I asked you to design SHIBAURA HOUSE, you had already done the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. I was aware of the term ‘open architecture’, but I didn’t really know what it meant in concrete terms. What it meant, where it was going to. What I’ve noticed recently is that it’s not enough for interesting things only to happen inside a building.

OPEN!FURNITURE: Installing public furniture along the canal in the Shibaura area.

That interesting ‘something’ has to spill out into the local area. And so ‘open architecture’ really means designing a whole landscape or area that will change people. That’s why I’m so grateful that Minato- ku got in touch with us, and why I’d like to take what we’re doing to the canal and the park, and hopefully that will help local people to understand how to use the architecture. And then, I think it would be great if not only us, but also the people from the city office, could also have the opportunity to think about how to approach the area by using SHIBAURA HOUSE.

S: SHIBAURA HOUSE is doing some really fun stuff, and I hope that that will create some sparks that will fly out into the cracks and gaps in the local neighborhood, and inspire people to think, ‘Oh, I’ve got a little space in my housing complex. It’s a bit far away from everything but let’s do something with it’. And if they have some trouble setting up their own initiatives then they could come and get some advice at SHIBAURA HOUSE.

I: If you’re able to connect the essence of nurturing those kinds of projects to administrative, educational, and economic activities, then I think it would help everyone open up. I think that ‘open architecture’ really means that a single building can open up the local area or city.
